Day 1
The first day of practice focuses on blocking techniques. Scates explains what they will be looking for in each drill throughout the practice. Throughout the day's drills, you will hear Scates coaching his blockers one-on-one. He also introduces a brand new drill to his team called the Flinch Drill. This drill is a very exciting drill used to see who the aggressive diggers are on his team.
Day 2
Day two starts off with a coaches meeting to discuss personnel decisions and to go over what they learned from Day 1 practice. The main focus of Day 2 drills is having he UCLA defenders read hitters and their choice of shots. Also covered is the idea of serving tough to try to disrupt the opponent's "go to" hitter.
Day 3
Day three of UCLA men's volleyball practice focuses mainly on serving with a great look at their pre-game strength and conditioning routine. Coach Scates explains his serving philosophies to his team and uses three different serving drills to work on it. The main goal of the serving drills is to disrupt the opponent's offense by keeping their main hitter out of the mix. The "pre-hab" exercise routine shows the entire workout that UCLA volleyball uses before a game. Great detail goes into showing the whole workout from warm-up to weight training.
This is an unprecedented chance to 'go inside'--and own forever--these lead off practices for the 50th and final season of volleyball's coaching legend, Al Scates.
