Iowa State’s Christy Johnson-Lynch demonstrates the training progression required to instill the necessary attack options every hitter needs to optimize their decision making during live play.  From handling a tight set, to out of system situations with attackers facing a dedicated block, Johnson-Lynch instructs how to optimize your practices so hitters will make the best shot selection in live game play.

Attack Progressions

Expecting hitters to make good attack decisions during a match without training them in all of the options during practice will not lead to a team’s success.  In this video, Coach Johnson-Lynch leads you through the training progression to train a variety of attack options.  Players start with box training to focus on hitting different zones, implementing a setter to work on the connection between your setters and hitters, and finally to small group games and 6 on 6 drills which reinforce shot selection choices.

Competitive Attack Decisions

Hitters need to evaluate their attack options during live play to improve their ability to score in matches.  From hitting high hands on the block, to wiping a tight set, players learn to identify their best options during the competitive drills shown in this video.  Johnson-Lynch trains hitters to learn when to attack aggressively by stressing specific situations and rewarding hitters for choosing specific shots.  This reinforces the attacker’s capacity for finding optimal solutions to any defense they may face during match play.

All hitters should have a couple of extra shots in their repertoire to draw upon during competitions.  In this excellent video, Iowa State’s Christy Johnson-Lynch will help you create confidence in your team by training them to be multi-dimensional attackers able to overcome defensive barriers in matches.  This video will increase the proficiency of your hitters, leading to team success!

Iowa State’s Christy Johnson-Lynch, the 2022 AVCA Midwest Coach of the Year, introduces drills to improve and invigorate your serve and pass techniques. Johnson-Lynch talks about how drills can be strategically placed in your practice sessions, and, be competitive, to make these type of drills less routine and more important to a practice by contributing to player development/growth and game-readiness.

The drills Johnson-Lynch shares go from one server - by themselves - to adding other activities for the server to do once the serve is successful.

Johnson-Lynch also shares suggestions on serving strategy, serving after a time out and adds excellent coaching points and takeaways throughout the video.

Johnson-Lynch then introduces several additional drills by adding passers - starting with a 2-on-2 drill, then 4-on-4 drill, a 6-on-6 drill, the ‘ISU Drill’ and others.

The drills shared are competitive and serve a wonderful secondary purpose as great conditioning exercises.

This video is a great video to make serve and pass drills a more competitive and less routine!
